MORABU Forest Improvement
Activities

Aiming to restore Japan's rich forests, which we can be proud of to the world.

Japan is a world-leading “forestry nation” with forests covering approximately 67% of its land area, and its forest coverage rate is the third highest in the world after Finland and Sweden.

Japan is blessed with abundant forest resources, but on the other hand, there are many forests that are not being well managed, and problems such as sediment disasters are occurring.

Therefore, MORABU Nature Environment Improvement Department has started a greening business to make the forests clean, focusing on thinning work in the company-owned forests.

Thinning is an important task for nurturing the mountains, and the remaining trees will grow large and firmly take root, resulting in “disaster-resistant mountains”.

Our Activity Areas

The main base for our activities is our company-owned forest. It is located in Aogaki-cho, Tamba City, Hyogo Prefecture, and is a scenic area where the changing seasons are clearly visible. This mountain forest is located at the northernmost point on the Pacific coast of Hyogo Prefecture, at an altitude of around 600 to 700 meters. It is known as the “lowest watershed”.

Our company-owned forests are also scattered throughout Fukuchiyama City in Kyoto Prefecture, and we are actively working on them every day.

Company-owned forests:
approximately 9 locations,
totaling approximately 20 ha

We are working on improvement activities in collaboration
with local forestry cooperatives.

  • 01 Research

We check the boundaries, confirm the current situation, and check for any dangers, etc., to find out the “current state of the mountains”, and prepare for future improvement plans.

  • 02 Cleaning cutting

We remove undergrowth and vines, etc., which are a hindrance to the growth of the trees we want to grow.

  • 03 Weeding

We cut down the thick undergrowth and young trees that have become a home for insects and animals, hide dangers, and deprive trees of the nutrients in the ground.

  • 04 Pruning

The branches of trees in the growth process are pruned to encourage the growth of high-quality timber. In addition, by allowing light into the forest and improving visibility, it prevents the intrusion of animals such as deer.

  • 05 Thinning

Trees that have been shaded by other trees during the growth process, or trees that need to be cut down to adjust the overall forest, are thinned to promote the growth of the remaining trees.
In addition, light is let into the forest and moderate undergrowth is cultivated to create a healthy forest.

  • 06 Reforestation

After trees have been cut down, they are replanted. The mountains are cultivated, and a form of living in harmony with nature over the long term is created, which is then passed on to the next generation.

After improvement After improvement

By cutting down trees, clearing away branches and allowing light into the forest, the mountain will grow healthily. The trees will grow bigger and their roots will spread out.
Before improvement, the forest was so dense with trees and branches that it was almost impossible to see anything, but as a result of the work, the branches that were in the way were cleared away and space was created for the trees to grow.

At the same time, light began to enter the forest, and the whole forest became visible, giving it a much clearer overall impression. In addition, by placing the felled trees horizontally, the outflow of sediment and nutrients is prevented, and the forest grows rich.

Professionals in forestry What we can do as MORABU Nature Environment Improvement Division Professionals in forestry What we can do as MORABU Nature Environment Improvement Division

  • 01 Large-scale forest improvement using cranes and other heavy machinery

We have a full range of cranes, excavators and other heavy machinery, so we can carry out large-scale improvement work. We can also carry out large-scale tree felling and transportation, which would be difficult for individuals, in a highly efficient and safe manner. This promotes the healthy regeneration of forests and the sustainable use of resources.

  • 02 Taking on the task of maintaining bamboo groves, which are difficult to manage, in a single package

Bamboo grows very quickly, and if left alone for even a short time, it will invade neighboring land and fields.
Neglecting bamboo groves can hinder the use of the land, so it is important to take action as soon as possible. Taking on the task of maintaining bamboo groves in a single package allows us to quickly eradicate the bamboo and carry out appropriate management.

  • 03 Accurately grasping the current situation through forest research

We will research the state of the forest, including the demarcation of boundaries, planting times, and the history of tree care, and report the results. By researching the types of trees and their growth conditions, we can help you to create an appropriate management plan and prevent problems before they arise.

  • 04 Our staff with specialist knowledge can also provide advice on subsidies and the procedures for handing over the land

We will guide you through the best support measures and procedures to ensure a smooth process. We will provide advice tailored to your situation and reduce your burden.

Thinned Wood Utilization
and Community Contribution

  • Product creation using thinned wood

We make a variety of products, including trays made from chestnut wood and chopstick boxes made from Japanese cypress. We sell the products we make at events such as flea markets, and use these events to promote our activities. By incorporating thinned wood into everyday household goods, we hope to create an opportunity for people to think about the importance of forest conservation while feeling the warmth of wood.

  • Providing forests as a place for learning

We provided the forests managed by MORABU as a place for local elementary school students to learn. The children tried their hand at cutting down cedar trees and studied the age and length of the trees.

We plan to continue with activities like this in the future, with the aim of creating a better environment and nurturing the hearts of children.
